Comment 1:

Katia Corriveau: I was the dirty fairy. Actually, it was the organic fairy. It was very funny because I got in makeup I think around 1 o'clock, and we didn't shoot till like 7 because Mark was so careful about the lighting. He wanted just the certain way. It was a very interesting experience being a little fairy with the wings and the long long hair. It's definitely what makes Mystique different. They come up with very creative ideas for the photo shoots. It's not just a girl on a bed. It's Barbarella, it's the fairies. I mean, the fairies is so unique.

Sunny Leone: When Mark had first told me I was going to be a fairy, I truly didn't understand exactly what it was going to be like till I got there. He kind of left it kind of as a little surprise. And then when I actually saw it, I was really amazed. The wings themselves were made out of tissue paper and bamboo. They looked like real wings. And the body paint and just getting ready for the photo shoot itself, I believe, took like 4 hours. At the final location where we took the pictures, I really felt like I wasn't myself. I felt like I was just this little like creature in the forest. Kind of scared for her life. And it was a lot of fun. I was a fairy in the Redwood Forest.

Deanna Merryman: I was hoping to be a Tinkerbell fairy, but instead I'm this painted totally silver warrior fairy. Sunny was amazing, it was really beautiful. I think the fans are gonna be, you know, there's a couple of them that might be a little, thinking, what's going on? Because they're not able to see the beauty. It's going to be true art. I've seen fairy books and everything because I love fairies, but it's definitely going to be up there. I think it's going to be really amazing.

Diana Kauffman: Being a fairy is very empowering. I feel like I'm in control. At the same time I feel kind of vulnerable to humans. Prepping for the fairy outfit was quite an ordeal. I mean, basically standing there being sprayed with glitter and different colors of paint and then putting extensions of the hair on and the makeup and the eyelashes, and then finally the wings. It was all very very fun. It's a really really great experience. Being a fairy to me means being a magical and mythical creature. Um, fairies have certain powers: fairies can fly. Everybody should be a fairy once.

Usually fairies are portrayed as fanciful, unrealistic and dreamy characters you'd expect to see in make-believe stories. So when he set out to create Mystique's fairy series, photographer Mark Daughn wanted to show that fairies could possibly exist in the real world. They could be both realistic and believable, and not just the fanciful and unreal type of fairy we are conditioned to expect.

So he went to great lengths in choosing just the right type of fairy each model would portray, based on her body type, her looks and her ability to emote the necessary feelings. Each model represents one of the different types of fairies in the series: water, woodland, warrior, and redwood.

The shoot was difficult for the models, as they had to endure hours of being body painted, being fitted with custom-made wings, and having prosthetics attached to their bodies. Posing was hard too, as the models had to step outside themselves and become something not real, yet all the while trying to make each photograph truly believable.
